As an NPO (National Portfolio Organisation) the Leicester Museums and Art Galleries offer free public access to six venues across the city. Supported by Arts Council England, Leicester Museums & Galleries has developed two new sound experiences to aid in their mission of Improving public wellbeing through engagement with collections and arts.

Two different products were used with the same aim – to encourage visitors to listen, focus and connect with their surroundings. Whispered Tales Ltd and a variety of community groups worked together to produce soundtracks that would be accessible via these items.

A solar powered audio post was installed in the Dementia Friendly sensory garden at Abbey Pumping Station, Leicester’s Industrial Museum. Seating was constructed alongside so that visitors can relax and enjoy the audio.

Two Audio Frames (our customisable all-in-one audio solution) were used to give the visitor a selection audio clips at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester’s flagship museum. Collaborating with Creative Good Ltd and Door 6 Ltd (formerly Antomic Woodworking) the audio player is housed in a specially designed and built unit.

The units are portable and can be moved to other settings which is critical given the multifunctional use of space in the museum. We worked closely with the curatorial team to help them create the ideal sound experiences in the chosen locations, bringing an extra level of engagement to visitors.
