July Newsletter – What we’ve been up to

Jul 27, 2016 | News

In this months newsletter we’re going to take a quick look at a few of our recent projects – because in all honesty we love what we do at blackbox-av and just can’t help but tell people about it.
Installations
Underfall Boatyard

We’ve recently completed the hardware and software fit out for the new visitor centre at Underfall Yard – a working boatyard in Bristol that dates back to the early 19th century.

Built within an old industrial power house the visitor centre showcases a robust maritime theme, utilising both modern software and more classic mechanical interactives.
The Urswick School Museum

The Urswick School in Hackney is one of the oldest schools in the country. To mark 495 years since opening in 1520 a museum space was developed within the school itself.

Created to help acquaint students with the schools rich heritage the space utilises a number of pictures and artefacts (some over 100 years old) along with AV exhibits.
Bespoke
King Alfred Audio Bust

Winchester’s award winning tourist information centre is now home to a bespoke audio bust of King Alfred the Great (just a short walk from the original statue which inspired its creation).

Created from laser cut polystyrene with a hard coat of plastic providing a bronze effect, the statue includes a push button activated audio track which tells the story of King Alfred from a first person perspective.
Trench Telephone

We developed two trench telephones for use in a new exhibition at the Scottish Parliament which explores the role of Scottish Women’s Hospitals throughout the world during WWI.

Utilising original telephones built into replica boxes, visitors to the exhibition are able to advance through a series of spoken letters and poetry in a manner that’s applicable to the time period in question.
Outdoor
U-Turn, Adelaide

A colourful U-Turn Round has found its way to Adelaide Australia where it’s helping educate local children on bird life in the area.

Utilising a standard U-Turn Round with a colourful polycure print, the ‘Bird wheel’ provides 8 different bird sounds upon winding of the wheel. Users have to guess which sounds belong to which birds with the correct answer provided at the end of the clip.
U-Turn, Girona

Continuing the theme of U-Turns abroad, Girona Spain is now also home to its very own wind-up audio points in ‘Park de les Ribes’.

Utilised to create an audio trail, a number of U-Turns have been installed around the Park to help engage people with the local wildlife by helping them understand the bird population and better recognise each species by sight and sound.
