6 Button Audio Kiosk – Harmondsworth Barn

With the visitor experience in mind, English Heritage contacted us to request the bespoke design of a 6 button audio kiosk. Able to share historical information and stories regarding the Barn and English agriculture with visitors. The brief was a kiosk that could hold 6 audio messages, output to 2 headphones, be low on power consumption and came equipped with a cover to use when the Barn is closed.

Harmondsworth Barn is a truly wonderful example of Medieval architecture located in the London borough of Hillingdon. It was Dubbed the ‘Cathedral of Middlesex’ by the late Sir John Betjeman, English Poet Laureate, writer and broadcaster.

The largest timber-framed structure in England, the now Grade 1 listed building was built in 1426, and most recently saw use for agricultural purposes until the 1970’s. It fell into disrepair until in 2009 English Heritage took notice and began some much needed restoration work. Now open every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month it’s free for visitors to explore and appreciate the level of skill involved in its construction.

We were also commissioned to design the panel artwork whilst audio was provided by English Heritage.

Oak was the material of choice, to match that used by the master craftsmen over 500 years ago during the buildings construction. The resulting kiosk as pictured above is one of a classic design, blending in nicely with the surrounding barn and allowing visitors to enjoy 6 different audio messages on the subject of the Barn and English agriculture in general.
