32″ Kiosk & Lightbox 3 – Hull and East Riding Museum

{

“The Blackbox Interactive kiosk has finished off our re-interpreted Medieval Gallery beautifully. It’s enabled us to add a variety of voices to the interpretation and to use the map of medieval Hull to set all our museum objects in a context. This has helped to make the whole gallery more accessible and inclusive.”

– Esther Hallberg, Access and Inclusion Manager – Hull Museums

The Hull and East Riding Museum of Archaeology holds a collection of historic items dating back as far as 235 Million years, from Romans and Saxons to Iron Age Villages and mammoths. The Museum has seen many changes since it was first founded by archaeologist J.R Mortimer over 100 years ago, but has settled in the 21st century under the shortened name of the Hull and East Riding Museum.

Recently, the Medieval Gallery saw the addition of a 32″ Freestanding Kiosk powered by our software package Lightbox 3, namely the ‘Hotspot’ app. Esther Hallberg, Access and Inclusion Manager at Hull Museums, goes on to explain how they utilised our flagship museum software;

“The kiosk is in our newly reinterpreted Medieval Gallery at the Hull and East Riding Museum. It has 2 interactive sections. The first is a map of Hull from medieval times that you can click on to discover more about different parts of the city such as the monasteries or the city walls. These hotspots include photographs, illustrations and short clips of Dave Evans, formerly the county archaeologist for the area, who worked on extensive excavations of Hull Old Town in the 1980s and 90s.”

“The second section of the interactive is interviews with a variety of people involved in uncovering the medieval past of Hull including Dave Evans as well as Dave Haldenby (a metal detectorist), Dr Lauren McIntyre (an Osteoarchaeologist or archaeological bone specialist), Dr Helen Fenwick and PhD candidate Ryan Prescott from the University of Hull and Finds Liaison Officer for the area Rebecca Griffiths. In the clips they are able to bring their unique perspectives and knowledge to build a picture of our understanding of medieval Hull.”

Positioned alongside a large panel depicting the Medieval Map of Hull the interactive is a great addition to the gallery, allowing visitors to explore that very map, delving deeper into the history of Hull.
