Spelthorne (a borough in Surrey) is named after the medieval ‘Spelthorne Hundred’ – an ancient name for an administrative division, although exactly why they were called ‘hundreds’ isn’t specifically known.

Interpretive designers Smith & Jones were recently commissioned to revamp some of the existing exhibition space, to help unearth the story of Spelthorne and present it to visitors in engaging ways.

As part of this project we supplied the hardware for a number of 32″ touchscreen kiosks. Each using our Lightbox 3 museum software that allows visitors to explore a selection of multi-media relating to the history of Spelthorne and surrounding area.

We were commissioned to build the beginnings of the interactive content, with the long term plan for curators on site to expand upon the materials over time – a task made easy by the simple to use Content Management System provided by LB3.

Each kiosk has a particular focus, whether it be the River Thames, the manufacturing histories of Spelthorne, or even stories and photos submitted by schools and visitors, each allows the museum to expand it’s interactive materials and evolve the visitor experience well into the future.
