Jane Austen is one of the most famous and beloved writers in English literature, thought by many to be second only to Shakespeare with Pride and Prejudice loved to this day and adapted for stage and film numerous times over the years. Her house in Chawton, Hampshire was both her home and where she wrote her six beloved novels, it’s now a cherished museum boasting an unparalleled collection of treasures belonging to the famous author.
Jane Austen’s House recently launched the permanent exhibition ‘Jane Austen and the Art of Writing’ celebrating Jane Austen as a ground-breaking and ambitious writer in the very place where she worked – directly linking Jane Austen’s creative process with the domestic space from which it came. Sophie Reynolds, Head of Collections, Interpretation & Events at Jane Austen’s House, goes on to explain Blackbox-av’s contribution.
At the centre of the exhibition, a specially-made 12-sided display case houses a full set of first editions of Jane Austen’s novels – which are very rarely seen together. Audio excerpts from the novels accompanies the display, read by Hattie Morahan and Dominic Gerrard – including the opening chapter of Pride and Prejudice and Captain Wentworth’s iconic letter in Persuasion.
