Museum Kiosk & Lightbox 2 – National Coal Mining Museum

{
The solution needed to be free standing, easily moved when required and with updateable interactive software, which made our free standing museum kiosk and Lightbox 2 the perfect option.
The Overton Colliery in West Yorkshire operated from the 18th century until it was closed in 1985, it was then reopened as a museum in 1988 and is now known as the National Mining Museum for England.

Coal mining has played (and continues to play) a massive part in English heritage so the aim of the museum is to preserve this heritage for future generations. Being built within a former coal mine means the museum can create enjoyable experiences for visitors both above and below ground, presenting a mixture of historical and contemporary mining methods as well as exhibiting various items relevant to mining and industrial archaeology.

Free-Standing Museum Kiosk

As well as their standard offer, the National Coal Mining Museum develops various special exhibitions throughout the year, providing visitors fresh experiences and shining a light on new aspects of coal mining. They approached us when looking for a touchscreen museum kiosk to be used in multiple exhibits as they change over time. The solution needed to be free standing, easily moved when required and with updateable interactive software, which made our free standing museum kiosk and Lightbox 2 the perfect option.

Constructed from timber, boasting an edge to edge 22″ multi-touch screen and weighing around 25kg the free standing museum kiosk is heavy enough to provide a solid interactive point for visitors, but lightweight enough to be easily moved when required. With a special coal-black paint job and running the customisable Lightbox 2, the Coal Mining Museum kiosk was a great fit and certainly ‘on brand’.

Lightbox 2 – Museum Software

Lightbox 2 is our off-the-shelf museum software designed to provide a multi-touch multi-media experience for visitors which is easily managed and updated by museum staff when required. Able to present photographic, audio, video and a web portal in an attractive and simple to use interface, Lightbox 2 is also easily customised with logos, backgrounds and various layouts.

This allows staff at the National Coal Mining Museum to add, remove and reorder content depending upon which exhibition the kiosk is currently being utilised within, for example recently it’s been used in the ‘Pit Profiles: Re-Profiled’ exhibition, displaying images, audio and video content exploring the personal stories of modern 21st century miners.
