Tablets with Bespoke Software – 2 Case Studies

Sep 2, 2015 | News

NMI – WWI Exhibition

As part of a WWI exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland called ‘Recovered Voices’ a number of photographic albums are on display. They can’t be physically interacted with by visitors for obvious reasons so we were tasked with developing a system which could provide electronic access.

Apple iPad

The NMI gallery software was developed around the Apple iPad – this hardware was specifically requested by the client and we were happy to oblige. The tablets themselves are in their 4th generation and well ready for the extremes of commercial use.

4 Albums

The gallery software displays a different album on each of the iPads;

Each with a homepage which introduces that particular album.
Users can pinch-zoom images and browse the gallery via gesture controls.
Access to the thumbnail gallery allows quick browsing of all images, with some galleries containing 100+ this was a must.
Greenpeace Festival Software

With a presence at the best British summer music festivals, Greenpeace were looking for a way to gather petition signatures from festival goers, as well as give access to a site specific map and informative video about the plight of our oceans. Starting at Glastonbury and then moving on to other festivals from there.

Windows Surface Pro

The Greenpeace festival software was developed to work on a Windows Surface Pro, chosen for its high quality 12″ display, great spec and ease of use. Our development team also finds it easier to work with the Windows OS (which is a plus!).

Petition – Map – Video

The Greenpeace software allowed festival goers to access 3 things;

A map of the festival ground – this could be updated for each new festival.
A video about the Great Barrier Reef, explaining the aim of the petition.
Finally the petition itself, which was stored locally in a new excel sheet on each tablet startup.
NMI – Fixed Exhibit
Each enclosure is a free standing unit with power cable running via the stand, they were installed through the display surface giving the impression of a desk mounted unit but with additional stability.
Greenpeace – Mountable & Movable
The Windows Surface enclosures were designed to be used in either a desk mounted fashion or simply left loose for people to pass around. The enclosure provides protection when loose and was also developed specifically to lock out access to screen corners – stopping users from accessing the OS backend via the charms bar and similar functions.

Both systems have proved a hit, with the Greenpeace tablets garnering huge amounts of petition signatures across several festivals and the NMI interactives allowing digital access to otherwise inaccessible photo albums which provide a truly unique perspective of the First World War.
