– Sage Hirsch, Museum Manager at the American Bookbinders Museum
The American Bookbinders Museum, located in San Francisco, California tells the story of books, presenting bookbinding as a hand process through its early mechanization. The American Bookbinders Museum offers visitors a permanent exhibition hall with a signature tour, audio tour, hands-on activities, a special exhibits gallery, and museum shop.
The beginning of the ABM’s self-guided tour includes the early history of the book and milestones in its development, such as the development of paper, printing, and the guild system. Videos were developed to visually explain these historical topics. Thanks to Blackbox-av’s Android tablets and in-house developed software Lightbox Lite, the ABM is able to offer these introductory videos in an easy to access and engaging format. Sage Hirsch, Museum Manager for the American Bookbinders Museum, goes on to explain.
The ABM installed an additional Blackbox-av tablet in our lobby making our introductory videos available to anyone that walks in. The lobby tablet acts as a teaser to interest visitors in the story of the book and the rest of the tour. The adaptability of Blackbox-av’s tablets allows them to also be used as effective marketing tools. They are updated quarterly sharing upcoming virtual lectures, workshops, and membership opportunities.
Utilisng two of the 15″ tablets and branding them to their needs via our Android based museum software ‘Lightbox Lite’ the American Bookbinding Museum is able to share videos and other media with visitors – this is a great example of the Lightbox Lite software being used by a very unique museum – in fact the only museum in North America dedicated to preserving and promoting the art and history of bookbinding!
