Custom Scales
Bespoke Weight Comparison Unit at Trentham Monkey Forest

As part of a larger project for Trentham Monkey Forest we built a number of unique items while completing their new Conservation Centre. One highlight is the comparison scales that let visitors see how they stack up to the average primate.

ā€œWeā€™re so pleased to have worked with Blackbox AV, in transforming our Conservation Centre into a wonderful interactive and immersive space.ā€Ā Says Lisa Wardell, Park and Education Manager at Trentham Monkey Forest.Ā ā€œWe had a couple of bespoke ideas which Blackbox were able to turn into a reality- and now our visitors have an amazing space where they can both see and hear all about our endangered Barbary macaques. ā€œ

Margam Country Park

A Beating Heart of Steel
Heart with Bespoke Subwoofer base located at Margam Park

Funded by the UK Government and designed in collaboration with Neath Port Talbot Council and Dramatic Heart of Wales, the Heart of Steel was developed to reflect the diverse beauty of Margam Country Park as well as the surrounding area of the valleys, steelworks and beach. Although an impressive sculpture it was missing one thingĀ  – an actual beating heart, which is where we came in.

ā€œFor us to be able to use the heart of steel statue at the Luminate Margam Park event, Blackbox-av created a new bespoke base for the original statue. This base allowed for the statue to be transferred more efficiently than the original design. The base increased the height of the statue, included an integrated sound system, removable water base hidden inside and added a realistic stone effect which discourages people front standing on the base..ā€

Key Mechanism
Bespoke Key Mechanism at Warkworth Castle

With much of its stone still standing after more than 800 years, Warkworth Castle has been a popular visitor attraction since opening to the public in the 18th Century. New additions to an ancient heritage monument such as this require a special approachā€¦ enterĀ Studio Wignall & Moore, an award winning design firm that includes architects and makers.

The sculpture pictured above was inspired by a medieval padlock and evokes interpretive character William Stowe and his role in protecting Warkworth Castle. Visitors turn the key with a satisfying ā€˜clunkā€™ to activate audio ā€“ a poetic description of the tower. The lock body blends into the surroundings with polished stainless steel, while solar panels in the rear power the internals.

Dotted around the castle are a series of information panels detailing a different characterā€™s journey which visitors can choose to follow. Each journey begins with a bespoke audio pillar, created using our Solar Audio Post electronics, these allow visitors to ā€˜meetā€™ each character and hear their words, written by award-winning author and poet Eley Williams.

Plotting Table Video Units
Bentley Priory Museum Exhibit with Open Frame Screen and Double Cup Headphones Front Landscape

RAF Bentley Priory is most famous for operating as Fighter Command in 1940 during the Battle of Britain, now a Museum Bentley Priory is dedicated to preserving and sharing this history with visitors. In the re-creation of a filter room we worked with the Museum to supply bespoke timber video units designed match the impressive mapping table where men and women would have charted the air battles unfolding over Britainā€™s skies during WW2.

The instructional units teach visitors how plotting would have been done at the time, offering button controls so users can move forwards and back through the videos and more easily follow the steps. Although using our modern headphone hanger, recreations of the style of headphone that would have been used at the time were sourced in order to aid visitor immersion.

Cockpit Reaction Game
User interacting with the bespoke Cockpit Control

IWM Duxford is the largest air museum in Europe housing an expansive range of aircraft and other vehicles depicting over 100 years of aviation and warfare. We were commissioned by Museum designers Pastporte to add a little bespoke interactivity to one of the exhibition spaces they were working on, where an impressive A-10C Warthog can be seen.

Used for school visits to help convey the insane reaction times required by pilots to fly such aircraft, we developed a physical ā€˜reactionā€™ game built into a re-creation of the A10 cockpit ā€“ complete with sound effects via our armoured cable headphones.

With an adjustable chair allowing persons of all ages to have a go, users simply sit in the cockpit and activate the game. The goal then is to hit each of the large red buttons as quickly as possible as they light up in a random sequence. Thereā€™s a time limit and a digital display provides the user with a final score.

We were commissioned by Three Rivers District Council to design and manufacture a bespoke cabinet for installation in the HIVE that would allow access to various types of multi-media. This cabinet would be comprised of many hardware and software solutions we offer at Blackbox-av, in order to meet these multimedia needs.

Trench Telephone
Trench Telephone Audio Point The Scottish Parliament

Designers StudioStand were tasked with developing a new exhibition at the Scottish Parliament that explores the role of Scottish Womenā€™s Hospitals around the world during the First World War. As part of the exhibition, StudioStand wanted to incorporate audio that would allow visitors to advance through a series of spoken letters and poetry from the era but in a manner which was applicable to the time period in question. We were comissioned to supply audio units that fulfilled this brief.

Trench Telephones were used for communication between front line and rear-echelon commanders at the time and were essentially rugged handsets stored inside various forms of boxes for protection ā€“ utilising these original devices seemed the obvious choice, it wasnā€™t only an intriguing way to share audio but also offered an insight into trench warfare.

The seemingly quiet town of Great Malvern was once a hotspot for music thanks to the Malvern Winter Gardens which welcomed an incredible list of bands from the 60ā€™s right through to 1990. Here as part of the Rock Around the Hills project we retrofit a genuine Jukebox to share stories from people that went to Winter Gardens gigs. Oral History Shoe
Bespoke Oral History Featured Image

We worked with heritage interpretation consultancyĀ inHeritage as part of a project for Wirksworth Heritage Centre. The end result is definitely unqiue, visitors are invited to raise various objects such as a shoe or sweet jar lid to their ear to hear audio that automatically plays when said object is lifted. Taking the functions of our standard Heavy Duty Handset and applying it to a very unusual container.

The oral history items were all part of a limited exhibition, ā€˜Open All Hoursā€™ was dedicated to the past and present businesses of Wirksworth and shares their story through objects, photos, videos, memories and even smells.

Bespoke Outdoor Audio Experience The Keepers of Bryngarw

The Keepers Quest
Keeper of the Meadow Interactive Audio Experience

Alongside the Bryngarw Park Rangers and the Bridgend County Borough Council we developed an exciting scheme called ā€˜The Keepers of Bryngarwā€™. The project uses art, sculpture, music, mythic storytelling and innovative technology in order to bring the story of the Park to life. Going beyond simply providing information the Keepers appeal directly to the imagination, creating a more engaging and meaningful visitor experience.

The Keepers are 7ft tall sculptures, carved from centuries old oak trees which once grew in the park. Visitors must travel the grounds to find each ‘Keeper of the Forest’ at which point they can use a unique Star Talisman device to activate various audio clips. We developed the system as a far more tactile and involving means of ā€˜waking the storyā€™.

Boombox Radio
Bespoke Boombox Radio for Land of the Lions ZSL London Zoo Enclosure

We supplied a number of different bespoke solutions to help bring London Zooā€™s new Land of the Lions zone to life.

Over in the Forests Guard Hut visitors can explore and learn about the life of a Forest Guard working in the Gir Forest. They spend their time tracking and monitoring the lions in the wild and carrying out essential conservation work. A simple audio exhibit was chosen for this area, in the form of a bespoke boombox radio which was wired with a Sound-Clip-2 in an IP box to provide audio. The radio was modified by ourselves to be fully weather proof.
