Case Study – Mixed Interpretation at Llanyrafon Manor

May 29, 2014 | News

A Grade II Listed building, Llanyrafon Manor is one of the most historic buildings in Cwmbran, South Wales. We were originally approached by their management team to simply supply AudioSigns, both Touch and Turn. Over the course of a year interpretation at the site developed and we were called back to provide a number of additional interpretive solutions around the Manor, each a separate commission.
AudioSigns
Our first commission involved the design and installation of AudioSign Touch’ and an AudioSign Turn around the Manor grounds, we provided both the hardware and graphics. Each sign shares audio in both Welsh and English focussing on animals that can be seen at the Manor throughout the year, including Otters, Bats and various Amphibians.
Audio Bench
Our next commission was to design and install a bench for the manor grounds – with a twist – this bench needed to incorporate audio. Sharing 5 tracks in both Welsh and English the solar powered audio bench provides information about local birdlife as well as a place to sit and enjoy the view. Designed for this project, the AudioBench has since become a standard product on our store.
Bag Hunt
We designed 8 different bug characters along with 9 signs to create a fun bug hunt for children to take part in. With each sign installed at different locations around the Manor children can not only hunt the real bugs, but have to find the friendly ‘bugglingtons’ as well.
Welcome Video
Working closely with the Manor team we scripted, recorded and produced a short welcome video about Llanyrafon Manor. The film welcomes visitors to the Manor and gives them a taste of it’s historic value with a focus on its use through 3 time periods.
Corner Screen
Following production of the video we were also commissioned to design and install a button activated HD screen to play it. The video is played upon the selection of Welsh or English via button press and creates a much more structured approach to interpretation at the Manor.
Replica Victorian Kitchen Range
To bring the kitchen to life we created a replica Victorian kitchen range, complete with crackling digital fire and doors that open to reveal a water boiler and food being warmed. Signage in both Welsh and English about the role such a range played in a Victorian Kitchen completed this uniqe piece of interpretation.
