Bespoke Heritage Interactive – Anne Lister’s Diaries

Summer is here, the sun’s out and local green spaces are filled with people enjoying the weather and reading books…. Speaking of books (professional segue) we’d like to tell you about one of our most recent bespoke heritage interactive projects for Shibden Hall.

Arguably one of the most interesting women of the nineteenth century. Anne Lister is described as a ‘Landowner, industrialist, traveller and diarist’ Anne Lister is more famously known as Britain’s first modern lesbian.

She was a prolific diarist, writing over 4,000,000 words in her journals – much of which was in a code which has since been cracked.

With access to the decoded Anne Lister Diaries, Shibden Hall wanted to display a selection of 5 extracts from these fascinating books in digital form.

5 books on the homepage lead to these extracts investigating different aspects of Anne’s life. This includes Anne Lister ‘The Adventurer’, ‘The Diarist’, ‘The Entrepreneur’, ‘The Gentle Lady’ and ‘The Socialite’.

Each contains an introduction in text with accompanying audio along with a scanned page of the original diary with a translated transcript and voice over.

The Anne Lister Diary software is hosted on our off-the-shelf Free Standing Kiosk – with a small but powerful PC and high quality 22″ multi-touch screen the software runs smoothly and looks great.
