With a rich heritage and strong fanbase, Scarlets is one of the most passionately supported rugby clubs in the world, let alone Wales. We were contacted when planning began for a new Scarlets Heritage Trail which would transform their Llanelli stadium concourse from a match day venue into an informative heritage trail through the use of audio visual exhibits. The project aims to ‘capture, preserve, celebrate and share over 140 years of history’ whilst creating a unique visitor experience and learning opportunities with a focus on school groups.

The concept was developed in-house with a focus on items that could quickly be hidden away during match day, and revealed when required. With this goal established we were approached in order to make it a reality.

Phase 1 would see the creation of informative signage which establishes the trail, with the inclusion of various audio visual elements. However Phase 2 will see the inclusion of additional technology including touch screens with interactive software and the development of a cinema area where a mixture of historical footage can be viewed.

Phase 1 Interpretation

Due to the nature of the heritage trail all signage needed to be easily hidden or stowed away during match day. A graphical timeline marks the centre of the trail using 6 large screens that can be remotely lowered and raised. The trail space itself is created using large signage boards on bespoke wheeled mounts presenting various images of Scarlets rugby whilst promoting the centres social media links.

Within the foyer a welcome screen helps to promote the trail, displaying its opening times and ticket prices. Ambient lights have been installed to create a red halo of lighting around the display cabinets whilst in the changing rooms a three button audio point provides anecdotes from past players as they reminisce about their time at Scarlets, including Phil Bennett and J J Williams, as well as a recording of a rousing locker room speech from Welsh rugby legend Carwyn James. This audio point was kept intentionally inconspicuous not to encroach upon the rooms primary use.

Phase 1 was completed and the heritage trail opened by Llanelli-born news anchor Huw Edwards in February, with Phase 2 set to get underway and see completion later this year.

Working with a local institution such as Scarlets has been a delight, they have a fantastic history and it’s an honour to bring some of their past glories back to life using modern and cutting edge audio visual technology.
